Central Park has anchored downtown San Mateo for a century. Inside it is a Japanese garden designed in the 1960s by Nagao Sakurai, a former landscape architect to the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, with a koi pond, a tea house and a granite pagoda. The shops and restaurants of B Street and Third Avenue begin just across the road.
